GENEVA, Ohio (Gophersports.com) - Highlighted by two of the fastest 600 meter performances in school history, the University of Minnesota men's track & field team finds itself in a tie for third after the first day of competition at the 2015 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Through five scored events at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, the Gophers hold 17.50 points - tied with Michigan State and trailing Nebraska at 39.50 and Penn State at 33.

"We had a good first day of competition, and we are in a position where we can really help our team standing tomorrow," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said.

Perhaps Minnesota's top performance of the opening day didn't even factor into the team's score as the Gophers qualified three competitors for the 600 meter finals in Nate Roese, Mitch Hechsel and Rashawn Fountain.

Leading all runners in the preliminaries, Roese clocked a 1:17.26 - a new personal record and the seventh fastest time ever by a Gopher in the event. Hechsel wasn't far behind with the second fastest preliminary time at 1:17.38 - also a personal record and the ninth best time ever at Minnesota. Fountain's 1:18.90 placed the sophomore ninth and sent the Gopher into the final along with his teammates.

The Gophers added six team points with a third-place finish in the distance medley relay on Friday. Derek Wiebke, Hechsel, Bradley Johnson and Blayne Dulian crossed the finish line at 9:42.94 in Minnesota's first DMR competition of the season.

The defending Big Ten outdoor long jump champion, Trevor Yedoni came in tied for third on Friday with a new season best mark of 7.27 meters (23-10.25 ft.). Yedoni's finish gave the Gophers 5.50 team points while Mark Jennings' fourth-place finish in the shot put added another five points. Jennings hit a new personal record of 18.60 meters (61-00.25 ft.).

True freshman Glen Harold added a point for the Maroon & Gold, tying for seventh in the pole vault. Harold cleared 5.07 meters (16-07.50 ft.) in his first appearance at the conference meet.

Minnesota also sent a pair of runners to the 800 meter finals as Goaner Deng ran a 1:50.18 to finish third in the prelims and Bradley Johnson clocked a 10:50.26 to finish fifth. Berkley Edwards also moved on in the 60 meters, qualifying with a 6.78, while Brad Neumann moved on in the 200 meters with a time of 21.32 - a new personal record. Dulian and Wiebke also moved on in the mile.
