The University of Minnesota celebrated National Girls & Women in Sports Day (Wednesday, Feb. 4) with a variety of functions over the course of the week.
The celebration began with the annual Jean Freeman Girls & Women in Sports Breakfast, held at TCF Bank Stadium at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. With 130 in attendance, this year's keynote speak was Susan Adams Loyd.
As the president and general manager at Clear Channel Outdoor, Loyd was also named the co-chair of the 2015 National Senior Games. Previously with Beavers Pond Press, Loyd spent more than 30 years in television management, including WCCO and KARE in the Twin Cities. She has also been an active member of many civic boards, including the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. Although never a University of Minnesota student-athlete, Loyd reached some of her best athletic performances later in life, when she won the National Senior Games championship in the 400 meters for her 55-59 age group.
After an inspiring speech to always dream big, Loyd and emcee Lynnette Sjoquist held a question-and-answer session for members in the audience. The event capped off with women's track student-athletes Anne Ferguson and Tess Wasowicz, who both spoke about how others paved the way for them to compete at the Division I college level.
As the University of Minnesota continued to celebrate the day, members of Gopher Athletics attended the Minnesota Girls & Women in Sports Day event, held at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul, Minn.
The week's events began on Monday, February 2, when the University of Minnesota Tucker Center held its annual Film Festival, which centered on "Women in Combat Sports."
The festivities will continue on Sunday, February 8, when the athletics department will host their own National Girls & Women in Sports Day in conjunction with the Gopher women's basketball game at Williams Arena. Autographs session with a variety of our student-athletes will be held after the 2 p.m. game.
