Big Ten Release

ROSEMOUNT, Ill. - Two members of the 15th-ranked Minnesota softball team received weekly honors from the Big Ten conference, the league announced Monday afternoon. Sophomore Sara Groenewegen was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, while Danielle Parlich received Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week accolades.

The reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Groenewegen picked up her second-career conference pitcher of the week honor and fifth weekly conference honor. Parlich won the Gophers' first freshman of the week award since Groenewegen earned it in April of 2014.

Groenewegen added to her prowess at the plate by going 3-0 in the circle in the first weekend of play. She allowed just one walk and eight hits over 16 innings on the weekend. She tossed a shutout with nine strikeouts against No. 11/13 Washington and allowed one base runner (reached via error) in four innings of work against UNLV. She finished the weekend with 26 strikeouts and a 0.88 ERA.

Parlich got off to a strong start to her Gopher career, reaching base and scoring at least one run in each of the team's first five games, including a 3-for-3, five-RBI performance against No. 11 Washington in the team's opener. She notched two doubles and two triples and finished the weekend hitting .583 with a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.083 slugging percentage. She was also successful in her only stolen base attempt.

Nebraska junior Kiki Stokes was named Big Ten Player of the Week, while Parlich shares her Big Ten Freshman of the Week plaudit with Kristina Zalewski of Michigan State.

Off to its second-straight 5-0 start, Minnesota will head to Florida this weekend to resume play.
