ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 13/11 Minnesota softball team dropped its final two games of the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla. Sunday. The Gophers were beaten, 10-5, by Fordham before falling to UAB, 1-0, at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The pair of losses dropped the team's record on the season to 14-4.
Blazers pitcher Cara Goodwin became just the third pitcher to keep Minnesota off the scoreboard in the Maroon and Gold's last 74 games dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season.
In the first game of the day, Fordham started quickly in the top of the first inning. The Rams plated nine runs to stake themselves to a sizeable lead.
Freshman pitcher Kylie Stober came on in relief in the second inning and quieted the Fordham bats. She allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work.
The Gophers' rally fell short as they could only muster five runs, leaving nine runners on base. Erika Rozell and Sara Groenewegen gave Minnesota some of its top offensive highlights of the day, hitting one home run each. Sam Macken collected three hits in the game, including a triple.
Nikki Anderson suffered her first loss of the season in the circle, falling to 3-1.
The weekend finale for the Gophers was a pitchers' duel. Minnesota and UAB combined for just eight hits and one unearned run in seven innings.
Following five scoreless frames, UAB's SaraBeth Williamson plated Caitlin Attfield with an RBI double.
Groenewegen received a hard-luck loss, falling to 8-2 on the season. She picked up nine strikeouts and now has a 22-5 collegiate record.
Minnesota resumes its season next week with a quartet of games at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Palo Alto, Calif. The Gophers will play Stanford three times and will also take on Santa Clara.
