ROSEMONT, Ill. - After a solid vault performance in Minnesota's upset of No. 2 Penn State yesterday afternoon, freshman and Plano, Texas native, Yaroslav Pochinka was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the conference office. This award marks the first weekly accolade of Pochinka's career and the first Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the Gophers in over four years. Zack Chase picked up the honor on March 14, 2011.
Pochinka was an instrumental part of the Gophers success yesterday as he earned a 15.100 on vault to win his second individual event title and help the Maroon and Gold solidify its lead over No. 2 Penn State.
The Plano Senior High School alum began competing on vault for the Maroon and Gold just three short weeks ago. In each of his three collegiate meets, Pochinka has scored a 15.100 or higher and has earned two individual event titles. The newcomer earned a career-high 15.350 last weekend as the Gophers hosted Iowa at the Sports Pavilion. The clip of his vault can be found below.
Minnesota will have a weekend away from competition before the Gophers travel to University Park, Pa. for the Big Ten Championships held on March 27-28.
