MINNEAPOLIS (Gophersports.com) - University of Minnesota student-athlete Gian Ferretti has been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week after setting a new school record and recording the top hammer throw in the nation over the weekend.
A native of Cascina, Italy, Ferretti won the 2015 Baldy Castillo Invitational with a toss of 68.94 meters (226-02 ft.) -- a personal record for the junior that currently stands as the top throw in the nation. The performance bests Gopher All-American Quentin Mege's 67.49 meters (221-05 ft.) for the school record (Mege's performance also came at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in 2013).
Ferretti notched one of two individual titles for the Gophers over the weekend and contributed 10 points to Minnesota's final score of 72. The Maroon & Gold finished third at the event to open up the 2015 outdoor season.
The Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honor is the first career accolade for Ferretti.
