Esser Leads Gophers in Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Freshman Agnes Esser won the discus with a lifetime-best throw of 53.66m as the Gophers competed in day one of the John McDonnell Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Behind Esser, three more Gophers placed in the top seven of the discus. Senior Devin Stanford was fourth with a throw of 49.52m. Ke-ke Burks placed sixth (47.52m) and Angie Guenther was seventh with a season-best mark of 44.26m.
Freshman Emma Spagnola finished third in the long jump with a collegiate-best leap of 5.81m. Kelly Flynn was 13th at 5.22m.
Freshmen Heta Tuuri (1.65m) and Katerina Gasteratou (1.60m) placed seventh and ninth, respectively, in the high jump. Tuuri tied her season best while Gasteratou made her outdoor debut.
Action at the John McDonnell Invitational continues Saturday. The first women's event is the hammer throw at 11:30 a.m., and the first women's event on the track is the 100m hurdles preliminary at 2 p.m.
