Gophers Travel to Silverado Showdown in Napa

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's golf team will travel to Napa, Calif. this Monday and Tuesday for the two-day Silverado Showdown.

Held at the par-72, 6,253-yard Silverado Resort and Spa (North Course), the 54-hole tournament will be contested with 36 holes played on Monday and the remaining 18 on Tuesday.

The University of Colorado and University of Oregon will cohost the 2nd annual tournament. Joining the Gophers in the field are Big Ten foes Wisconsin and Northwestern, along with California, Colorado State, GRU Augusta, Harvard, Hawaii, Long Beach State, New Mexico, Oregon State, San Jose State and Washington State.
 
Play is set to begin both days at 8:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start.
 
The Course
 
The Silverado Resort and Spa (North Course) was redesigned by PGA Hall of Famer Johnny Miller and was ranked the No. 22 course in California by Golfweek. It was also the No.27 course in the 2013 Golf Digest ranking of "America's Top 50 Courses for Women."
 
Past champions from the six hosted PGA and Senior PGA events held at the course include Miller, Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Fleisher, Billy Casper, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Lee Trevino.
 
2014 Silverado Showdown Recap
 
This is the Gophers first appearance in the tournament after its inaugural iteration in 2014.
 
The Washington Huskies claimed the team title firing a 3-under-par 861 (-3, 289-292-280--861).  The USC Trojans finished second 10-over (+10, 295-287-292--874). Rounding out the top three team placements was the Northwestern Wildcats with 12-over-par (+12, 291-294-291--876).
 
The individual crown was claimed by Washington's SooBin Kim who fired a 9-under 207 (+9, 68-71-68--207).
 
Last Time Out - Web.com Intercollegiate
 
Two weekends ago, the Gophers traveled to Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. for the Web.com Intercollegiate tournament. The Maroon and Gold finished tied for 11th place with Texas State at 898 (298-295-305).
 
Senior Anna Laorr earned her fifth top-25 finish of the season with a three-round consecutive score of 73, resulting in a three-way tie for 22nd (+3, 73-73-73--219).
 
Fellow senior Sarinee Thitirantankorn tied for 32nd, three strokes behind Laorr (+6, 73-74-75--222). 
Senior Carmen Laguna fired a 9-over-par 225 (+9, 76-74-75--225) followed by sophomore Emie Peronnin, one stroke behind, at +10 (+10, 72-77-77--226).
 
To round out the Gopher lineup, freshmen Sabrine Garrison and Celia Kuenster tied for 73rd at a 16-over-par 232.
 
Delfina Acosta of the Miami Hurricanes claimed the individual title with shooting 10-under for a final score of 206 (-10, 67-68-71--206).
 
As a team, the Hurricanes won the team titles with an impressive total 851, 13-under-par. 
 
Looking Ahead
 
In just under two weeks, the Gophers will head to the Big Ten Championships held in Indianapolis, Ind. at the Fort Golf Course. Competition will span over three days beginning Friday, April 24 with the Big Ten individual and team champions being crowned on Sunday, April 26.
