MINNEAPOLIS -- Sophomore Sara Groenewegen threw her second-career no-hitter as the No. 15/11 Minnesota softball team defeated Northwestern, 11-0, in five innings Sunday to complete a three-game weekend sweep. Groenewegen struck out 12 of the 17 batters she faced as she earned her 21st win of the season and helped the Gophers improve to 33-7 with a 9-3 mark in the Big Ten.
Groenewegen's no-hitter was the 22nd in program history with the last one coming April 26, 2014 when the White Rock, B.C. native held Penn State hitless in a 9-0 win as a freshman.
Danielle Parlich got the Maroon and Gold on the board in the first with a two-run double down the left-field line.
The Gophers pulled away in the third inning by pushing across nine runs.
After Sam Macken scored from first on a sacrifice bunt by Kaitlyn Richardson and an error by NU left fielder Krista Williams, Hannah Granger singled home pinch runner Brandi McGregor.
Following an Erica Meyer bases-loaded single that made it 5-0, Paige Palkovich broke the game open with her first-career grand slam. In her second plate appearance of the inning, Richardson gave Minnesota an 11-0 cushion with a two-run shot.
The victory gave the Gophers their first sweep of NU in a series of three or more games since 1991. Parlich led the team on in the three-game set with a .750 batting average, while Palkovich hit .571 with a 1.429 slugging percentage and nine runs batted in. Groenewegen fanned 27 batters in 12 innings of work in two wins in the circle.
Minnesota wraps up a seven-game home stand Wednesday against South Dakota before hitting the road to play Michigan State.
