EAST LANSING, Mich.- The No. 13/10 Minnesota softball team plated five runs in the seventh inning to complete an 8-4 comeback win over Michigan State at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. Friday afternoon. The win gave the Gophers a 35-7 record on the season and a 10-3 mark in the Big Ten.
The meeting was the teams' first since 2011. The Maroon and Gold won in East Lansing for the first time since 2008.
Tyler Walker opened the scoring with a second-inning double, but MSU took a 3-2 lead with a Leah Foerster RBI triple and a Stephanie Sanders two-run home run in the third.Â
The score held until the top of the sixth inning when Walker led off by dropping a single into shallow right field, setting the stage for a game-tying RBI triple by Sam Macken.
In the seventh inning, Danielle Parlich kicked Minnesota off with a leadoff triple, her team-best fourth of the season, and Hannah Granger gave the Gophers a 5-3 lead with her 10th homer of the season. Two batters later, Erica Meyer went deep to make it 7-3.
Minnesota used a sacrifice bunt by Sam Macken to scratch across another run to seize and 8-3 edge and Michigan State's Kassidy Kujawa capped the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
Nikki Anderson improved to 6-2 on the season with a win in the pitching circle. She allowed one run in 2.1 innings of work. Sara Groenewegen racked up eight strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched.
The Gophers and Spartans will play the second game of their series Saturday at noon CT and will cap their weekend with a Sunday contest at the same time. Minnesota plays home games against North Dakota State and Iowa next week.
