The Golden Gophers turned in three individual under-par rounds and are fifth through 36 holes of the Hawkeye-GRE Invitational. Jose Mendez is seventh with rounds of 71 and 69 for a 4-under day.
Minnesota played even-par golf at Finkbine Golf Course on Saturday, with a team total of 576. The Gophers are three shots behind fourth-place Wichita State. Iowa State is in the lead at 13-under.
"Finkbine Golf Course played firm and fast today," head coach John Carlson said. "Our team took advantage of the par-5s as we played them 14 under par. Jose got back into championship form today. Riley, Rúnar and DuToit continued their solid play. With rain and wind expected tomorrow for the final round, I like our chances to make up ground on the leaders."
Mendez made eight birdies and four bogeys on the day. He is two strokes out of a tie for second, and nine shots behind leader Louis Cohen Boyer of Wichita State. Mendez's second-round 69 tied his lowest round of the spring.
Riley Johnson is tied for 16th with a 1-under total of 143. He carded a 2-under 70 in the opening round. Jon DuToit eagled the par-5 15th in the morning round, and shot scores of 72 and 73 to sit tied for 24th.
Rúnar Arnórsson shot two 74s to score in both rounds. He is tied for 33rd. Charlie Duensing rounded out the lineup with rounds of 75 and 80.
The third and final round will take place Sunday.
