EAST LANSING, Mich.- The No. 13/10 Minnesota softball team won its seventh game Saturday in a row Sunday, defeating Michigan State, 9-4, at Secchia Stadium in East Lansing, Mich. The win was the Gophers' 17th road victory of the season, tying a program record.
In addition to clinching its third series sweep of the year, Minnesota improved to 37-7 on the year and 12-3 in the Big Ten.
The Maroon and Gold got on the board first in the first inning by capitalizing on an MSU error at second base that allowed Sam Macken to score. A bases-loaded single by Tyler Walker and a sacrifice fly by Macken in the second made it 3-0, but the Spartans rallied in the third with a pair of run-scoring doubles that tied the game.
Â
MSU went ahead 4-3 with an Ellie Stoffer RBI double, her second of the game in the fifth, but the Gophers made MSU's lead short-lived.
Before the Spartans could record an out in the top of the sixth, Hannah Granger belted a two-run double to the wall. Kaitlyn Richardson made it a 6-4 game with a sacrifice fly. Minnesota padded its lead further in the seventh with an RBI triple by Sara Groenewegen and a two-run home run by Danielle Parlich.
In the circle, Groenewegen tied a career-best with 15 strikeouts, tossing a complete game for her 22nd win of the season.
Â
The Gophers will finish non-conference play Wednesday with a doubleheader versus North Dakota State before hosting Iowa in a weekend series.
