Gophers Head to Indy for B1G Championships

April 23, 2015 The seventh-seeded University of Minnesota women's golf team will head to the 2015 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships this weekend held in Indianapolis, Ind.

All 12 Big Ten schools will send their women's golf programs to the 6,221-yard, 72-par course at the Fort Golf Resort.

"I thought leading up to the tournament we had really good practices," said fourth-year head coach Michele Redman. "We gave them a few days off so they should all be rested. We're going into this with a good attitude and some confidence. We haven't played the way we wanted to the last three tournaments, but we are looking forward to playing well this week. I think right now confidence is the key to being successful this weekend."

The first and second rounds of the championships will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively, while the final round begins at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Last Time Out - Silverado Showdown

To conclude their regular-season campaign, the team traveled to Napa, Calif. for the 2015 Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort North Course.Â

After two days of action, the team finished 13th overall at +67 (310-312-309--931) with senior Carmen Laguna collecting her second top-20 finish of the year, tied for 205h (74-74-77--225).

Sophomore Emie Peronnin finished tied for 32nd at 13-over-par (+13, 78-77-85--240) while freshman Celia Kuenster tied for 66th (78-77-85--240) and senior Anna Laorr tied for 70th (80-87-76--243).

Rounding out the Gopher lineup was senior Sarinee Thitirankorn tying for 73rd (83-84-82-249).

The tournament co-host, University of Oregon Ducks claimed the tournament title with a final tally of 889, 25-over-par. The individual title was awarded to Lucia Gutierrez from Cal-Berkeley who fired four-under-par (-4, 73-71-68--212).

Minnesota at the Big Ten Championships

The Maroon & Gold will compete this weekend in the hopes of landing Minnesota's second Big Ten title after capturing the conference crown in 1989. The Gophers have twice earned the individual Big Ten title with Kate Hughes taking home the honor in 1988 and 1989. Additionally, Hughes was named the 1989 Big Ten Player of the Year with Minnesota also garnering Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors for Sara Evens in 1990 and a trio of Big Ten Coach of the Year honors (Anne Zahn in 1987, Nancy Harris in 1989 and Kathy Williams in 1992). Minnesota has also had 13 golfers earn a combined 23 All-Big accolades.Â

Last season, the Gophers earned a fifth-place finish at the tournament at the Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort in Indiana. The Gophers carded a 309-312-297--918 (54 over par) for the tournament while Ohio State captured the team title at 301-297-298--896 (32 over par). Then-junior Carmen Laguna finished tied for ninth, firing a 78-76-73--227 (11 over par) to pace the Gophers. Also recording top-25 finishes were juniors Sarinee Thitiratanakorn (T-18th, 75-80-75--230) and Anna Laorr (T-23rd, 78-76-77--231).

The team's fifth-place finish was its highest under head coach Michele Redman.

Following this weekend's conference championship, the Gophers will await their postseason fate when the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships selection announcement takes place on Monday evening. The field will be announced live on the Golf Channel from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Central time.
