Each Friday we will profile a future freshman that will be joining us at the University of Minnesota this fall. This week, we welcome Lauren Lalumiere from Oakville, Ontario Canada. Lalumiere is a middle-distance and distance swimmer, and her favorite race is the 400-meter free. Lalumiere will join the Gophers from Iroquois Ridge High School and Oakville Aquatic Club.Â
Gopher Sports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Lauren Lalumiere: I knew it was for me as soon as I got to spend time with the team and the coaches. It has such a great team atmosphere! It also had the Urban Studies Program that I was looking for. The University of Minnesota is really just a perfect fit!
GS: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
LL: I'm excited to make new friends and to be a part of such an accomplished program! Â I'm really looking forward to Minnesota helping me to continue towards my goals and pushing me to be my absolute best.
GS: Thus far, what has been your best or most proud swimming memory?
LL: Going to the 2012 Olympic Trials when I was 14 was extremely exciting! I hadn't even known that I had qualified, or what I had even qualified for! Â Also, being on the bronze-winning 4x200 free relay team at the 2013 World Trials was really rewarding.
GS: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?Â
LL: Well that doesn't really leave a lot of time! I love reading, hanging out with friends, and listening to music all day long. I always have a headphone in my ear; you can ask anyone!
GS: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?Â
LL: Even though I'm mainly a distance swimmer, I am hoping that my range will allow me to help out on relays!
GS: What else do you want to share with the Gopher Family?Â
LL: I really enjoyed seeing so many Gopher ladies at the recent Canadian Trials, and was so excited to see Kierra Smith be named to our National Team.
