Throwers Close Weekend in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Gophersports.com) -- The University of Minnesota men's track & field team closed out the weekend of competition as the throwers wrapped up the 2015 Triton Invitational on Saturday night with a trio of top-10 finishes and a pair of personal records.
Gian Ferretti led all Gophers in the hammer throw at 64.93 meters (213-00 ft.), but was unable to pick up his fourth-straight title of the season among a talented field of competition. Ferretti, who broke the school record to open the outdoor campaign, finished third while Justin Barber finished 13th at 56.86 meters (186-06 ft.), Viktor Stelter came in 16th at 54.31 meters (178-02 ft.) and Mac Riedy finished 21st at 51.97 meters (170-06 ft.).
Mark Jennings upped his outdoor personal record in the shot put for the second-straight week to finish eighth in the invitational field on Saturday. The senior captain cleared 18.53 meters (60-09.50 ft.).
Bryan Bjerk paced a trio of Gophers in the discus throw open with his 10th-place performance. Bjerk hit a new personal record at 53.12 meters (174-03 ft.) and also finished 20th in the open shot put competition, clearing 15.30 meters (50-02.50 ft.). Sam Elsner (52.20 meters, 171-03 ft.) and Barber (51.90 meters, 170-03 ft.) finished 14th and 16th, respectively, in the open discus throw.
