SAINT PAUL, Minn. (Gophersports.com) -- The University of Minnesota men's track & field team opened the weekend with a dominant performance at Concordia-St. Paul's Golden Bear Twilight, winning six events including a pair of titles from redshirt freshman Jordan Charles.
"We had a lot of success at the first Golden Bear Twilight in 2012, and it was great to pick up where we left off after the last two years were canceled due to weather," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "We had a number of guys set personal records tonight, and it was great to see that as we get closer and closer to the championship meets."
Charles cleared 14.30 meters (46-11.00 ft.) for his second triple jump title of the season to start the night and then added a title in the 100 meters in his first race at that length to close it out. The redshirt freshman paced the finals with a 10.71 after hitting 10.96 in the preliminaries. Quinton Coleman finished second in the 100 meter prelims with a personal record of 10.72 but pulled out of the finals.
The Gophers also paced the high jump performance behind Danny Schiller's winning height of 2.13 meters (6-11.75 ft.) -- a new meet record for the Golden Bear Twilight that also matched Schiller's personal record. Nick Bachinski finished second at 2.08 meters (6-09.75 ft.) to also match his personal record while Ryan Lockard tied for third at 1.98 meters (6-06.00 ft.).
Justin Barber picked up the Gophers first title of the night in the hammer throw. The senior captain set a new meet record at 59.52 meters (195-03 ft.) while Sam Elsner came in third with a personal record at 55.39 meters (181-09 ft.).
Trevor Yedoni had his best jump of the outdoor season to win the long jump at 7.23 meters (23-08.75 ft.) and Logan Markuson added a title in the pole vault after clearing 4.80 meters (15-09.00 ft.).
Rashawn Fountain closed out the night for the Maroon & Gold with the 400-meter hurdles title, crossing the finish line at 53.62 -- more than five seconds ahead of the competition.
Additionally, Tony Joyer finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.69 while Bryan Bjerk came in third in the shot put at 15.42 meters (50-07.25 ft.) -- a new outdoor personal record.
Minnesota continues to compete this weekend on Saturday at Iowa's Musco Twilight in Iowa City.
