Gophers to Compete in Various National Championships

Alumni and current student-athletes will compete around the globe this weekend.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program will have representatives around the world competing for a chance to represent their countries at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, later this year. The first of the competitions starts on July 31, with the USATF Outdoor National Championships in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. The track and field qualifying window for the 2025 World Championships closes on August 24.
Competitors for the Maroon and Gold
Over the next month, ahead of the August 24 deadline, athletes from around the world will make their final push for World Championships qualifying. Minnesota has a number of current student-athletes and alumni that will compete across at least seven different countries. Minnesota will be most represented at the USATF Outdoor Championships with five members of the program competing at Hayward Field. In Europe the Maroon and Gold have participants at the Greek Championships (Kostas Zaltos and Angelos Mantzouranis), the Croatian Championships (Spencer Brown) as well as at the Swedish Championships (Maja Maunsbach). Charles Godfred will compete in the long jump at the Nigerian Championships in the continent of Africa while Kion Benjamin will run in the 100m at the Trinidad & Tobago Senior Championships.
Last Time Out - 2023 World Championships
At the last World Championships in 2023 the Golden Gophers had five different representatives participate at the event in Budapest, Hungary. Kostas Zaltos (Hammer), Devin Augustine (4x100m relay), Nayoka Clunis (Hammer) and Heta Tuuri (High Jump) all qualified while volunteer assistant coach Brandon Carnes was a part of Team USA's 4x100m relay team. Carnes won a gold medal in the 4x100m relay (37.38) in Budapest while Augustine and the Trinidad & Tobago quartet narrowly missed the final (38.89). Individually the Golden Gophers saw Zaltos finish 30th overall in the men's hammer, Clunis was 35th in the women's hammer and Tuuri tied for 14th in the women's high jump.
