MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 14/12 Minnesota softball team dropped a 9-1 decision in six innings to fourth-ranked Michigan at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium Sunday in the teams' weekend rubber match. The Gophers fell to 30-7 on the season and 6-3 in the Big Ten.
Following a scoreless first inning, Sierra Lawrence got Michigan on the board first for the second-straight day, this time with a two-run single in the second.
Danielle Parlich, who hit .500 in the three-game series, cut Minnesota's deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double.
The one-run margin did not change until a sacrifice fly by Lauren Sweet gave Michigan a 3-1 lead in the fifth. The Wolverines pulled away in the sixth with six runs to make it 9-1. The Gophers left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Minnesota starting pitcher Sara Groenewegen suffered her fourth loss of the season in the circle, falling to 19-4 on the year. She struck out seven batters to up her season strikeout total to 207.
The Gophers host three games against first-place Northwestern next weekend before completing a seven-game homestand against South Dakota April 15.
