Groenewegen Twirls Gem, Gophers Win

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 13/9 Minnesota softball team shut outPurdue, 1-0, Friday night at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in the first game of the teams' three-game series. Sara Groenewegen matched a career-high with 15 strikeouts and earned her 27th win of the season, allowing just two hits.
The Gophers improved to 44-8 on the season with an 18-3 mark in Big Ten play. They have now matched their 2014 win total, which was the fourth-highest win total in program history.
Groenewegen's 15 strikeouts gave her 313 for the season, the third-most in a single season in program history. Her 27th victory tied her for the third-most for a Minnesota pitcher.
Purdue starter Lilly Fecho began the game by retiring the first 10 batters she faced before Danielle Parlich notched Minnesota's first hit of the day with a double in the fourth, extending her team-best hit streak to 20 games.
After the Maroon and Gold failed to score in the fourth,Paige Palkovich plated the game's lone run with a two-out RBI double in the fifth, scoring Erica Meyer from third base.
The teams will conclude their regular seasons Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Minnesota will celebrate its senior class prior to the first game. The Gophers willstart postseason play next weekend at the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
