Swimming & Diving's Jessica Plant and Chris Johnson have been announced as the University of Minnesota's recipients of the Big Ten Conference postgraduate scholarships.

Plant, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, received the Big Ten's Wayne Duke Scholarship award.  A Rhodes Scholarship finalist, Plant is a two-time Academic All-American, and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She is finishing her final undergraduate academic semester with a 4.0 GPA in her coursework toward her art history and classical civilizations degrees. Plant plans to pursue graduate work in art history and archaeology.

Johnson, a native of Austin Texas, finished his career as an eight-time scholar athlete and a two-time CSAAA Academic All-America honorable mention. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, Johnson is a biomedical engineering major. Johnson is pursuing a master's degree, also in biomedical engineering. He plans to focus on alternan formation in a cable model of myocardial cells.

To qualify, student-athletes must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.

The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection. Both Plant and Johnson will receive $7,500 towards their continued education.

In all, 29 student-athletes from the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were awarded the scholarship, based on primarily academic achievements.
