Minnesota outhit UC Irvine for the second day in a row, but committed a pair of errors as the Anteaters completed a series sweep with a 6-2 win Sunday. The Golden Gophers (19-25) had 11 hits to UC Irvine's six, but left 12 men on base.
After a sacrifice fly scored an inherited runner in the fifth, Brian Glowicki struck out four and provided four scoreless innings of relief for the Gophers, but they could not catch up after UC Irvine (28-16) took an early lead. Minnesota trailed 6-0 before left fielder Matt Stemper drove in both the Gophers' runs with a home run in the sixth. He batted 2-for-5 on the day.
The Anteaters quickly took advantage of an error in the first to go up 3-0. Kris Paulino hit a leadoff single and advanced on a wild pitch. Mikey Duarte reached on an error while Paulino moved to third. Keston Hiura hit a single to score Paulino. Both Duarte and Hiura were in scoring position after a Mitchell Holland sacrifice bunt. Duarte scored on Cameron Bishop's sacrifice fly.
Hiura and Jerry McClanahan were on the corners after a walk when Hiura scored during a rundown. Catcher Austin Athmann threw to shortstop Michael Handel, who relayed it to first baseman Toby Hanson to tag McClanahan. The steal attempt allowed Hiura to score before Minnesota recorded the third out on the tag.
Starter Tim Shannon (2-5) sent the Anteaters down in order the next two innings. He would allow four hits in his four innings, and just two of the six runs he gave up were earned. Wyatt Castro's two-run double scored Holland and Bishop, the latter of whom reached on an error, in the fourth. A passed ball aided UC Irvine's final run scorer who came across the plate on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Gophers notched nine hits off Anteaters left-hander Evan Manarino (5-2), who pitched six innings. Athmann hit 2-for-4 and second baseman Connor Schaefbauer 2-for-5.
After Stemper's one-out home run to left, third baseman Tony Skjefte and Athmann followed with singles. But the Gophers left the bases loaded after a two-out Tyler Hanson walk. The Gophers also had multiple singles in the scoreless fifth, with Athmann and center fielder Jordan Smith reaching base.
