Parlich Named Top-10 Freshman of Year Finalist

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- First-year Minnesota softball student-athlete Danielle Parlich has been named a top-10 finalist for the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the organization announced Thursday. The award will be presented prior to the start of the 2015 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Parlich is the lone Big Ten finalist for the honor, which came into existence in 2014. Current Gopher sophomore and Big Ten Player of the Year Sara Groenewegen was a top-10 finalist last season.

Parlich is the lone Big Ten finalist for the honor, which came into existence in 2014. Current Gopher sophomore and Big Ten Player of the Year Sara Groenewegen was a top-10 finalist last season.
A native of Queen Creek, Ariz., Parlich has helped guide Minnesota to a 46-8 record on the season, starting all 54 of the team's games at second base. The First Team All-Big Ten selection leads the team with a .410 batting average and has a team-best 71 hits. She has struck out only 10 times and has 36 runs batted in, nine doubles, four triples and two home runs.
In addition to reaching base in 51 of 54 games, Parlich has made big plays in the field, assisting in 11 double plays en route to being named to the Big Ten All-Defensive team. She has also added 10 stolen bases.
Minnesota will pick up play at the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio this week. The defending champion Gophers will be the tournament's second seed and will receive a bye in the first round. They will play either No. 7 seed Rutgers or 10th-seeded Iowa in the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. CT Friday on the Big Ten Network.
