MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's cross country and track & field program ended the 2014-15 year ranked 16th in the final standings for the Terry Crawford NCAA Division I Women's Program of the Year award presented annually by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at each of the three NCAA Championships.
The Gophers placed 31st at the NCAA cross country championship, and Jess Herauf was fifth in the pentathlon for Minnesota at the indoor track & field national meet. Minnesota wrapped up the academic year with two scoring finishes at the outdoor track & field championship to tie for 32nd in the team standings as Herauf took fifth in the heptathlon and Nicolle Murphy finished sixth in the javelin.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is determined on a team's finish at each NCAA Championship for cross country, and both indoor and outdoor track & field (first = one point, second = two points, 10th = 10 points, etc.). The lowest total score after all three championships combined determines the winner.
Oregon, Arkansas and Stanford took the top three places in the standings for this year's women's award. Wisconsin (fifth), Michigan State (seventh) and Michigan (eighth) join the Gophers in representing the Big Ten in the final standings.
