This week we welcome the number one recruit from Minnesota, and incoming Gophers freshman Zoe Avestruz! The Chaska, Minnesota native competed for Chanhassen high school and Aquajets Swim Team. Avestruz was both high school and club teammate with Bridgette Grobe and incoming freshman Kaia Grobe. Her favorite race is the 100 backstroke, and Avestruz's top time in that event (51.98) is faster than the current University of Minnesota school record.
Gopher Sports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Zoe Avestruz: The school has a great campus, amazing academic opportunities, and an excellent swim program filled with talented swimmers and close friends!
GS: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
ZA: I'm excited to not only be able to represent my college, but I'm also excited to get to know everyone there and become close with them! I believe that when you surround yourself with exceptional people, you will take on their characteristics, making you exceptional as well. They can push you to be a better person and swimmer - that's what I'm most excited about.
GS: Thus far, what has been your best or most proud swimming memory?
ZA: My favorite memory was going to my first Junior Nationals (NCSA's in Orlando, Florida) and swimming the first event: 200 medley relay. The Aquajets have been winning these relays for many years and with Rachel Bootsma (my former teammate) gone at college, I was filling her place as the backstroker. I was really nervous, but we ended up winning the relay and that really gave me motivation to keep working hard to be the best I can be so that I can represent my team and myself as best as I can.
GS: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
ZA: I love to go biking, read books and bake.
GS: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
ZA: I hope to continually bring life to the team, as well as be a good teammate and swimmer!
Go Gophers!
