MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - In an effort to celebrate and promote healthy lifestyle choices in the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," Gopher Hockey will host a "Day of 10,000 Steps" at Mariucci Arena on Sunday, July 26.
In accordance with the belief that 10,000 steps per day is one way to improve health, the Gophers will join fans for a walk through the University of Minnesota campus and along the Mississippi River beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Starting at the main Mariucci Arena entrance (east side of arena), the walking path will meet up with the Stone Arch Bridge before looping back around to campus via the Dinkytown Bikeway Connection and returning to Mariucci Arena. The walking path was carefully designed to avoid most streets and make the walk more family friendly while also highlighting Minneapolis' numerous exercise paths - one of the many reasons Minneapolis was named America's Healthiest City by Forbes Magazine.
The free event will kick off with autographs and photos with the Gophers as well as the Big Ten Regular-Season Trophy and Big Ten Tournament Trophy in front of Mariucci Arena beginning at 10 a.m., while water coolers will be available before and after the walk. Fans are encouraged to register for the walk at http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/day-of-10000-steps.html.
The 2015-16 Gopher Hockey season marks the 95th campaign in program history. Minnesota enters the season having won four-straight regular-season conference championships for the first time in modern history while the team swept the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles last year. The Maroon & Gold have also earned four-straight NCAA tournament berths including Frozen Four appearances in 2012 and 2014. Season tickets for the 2015-16 campaign are available for purchase by contacting the University of Minnesota Ticket Office in Mariucci Arena at 612-624-8080 or 1-800-U-Gopher.
