Groenewegen Dominant In Gold Medal Game

Minnesota Gophers own Sara Groenewegen pitched an eight inning seven strikeout game allowing just one earned run as Canada topped the USA in the Pan American games to win its first gold medal since 1983. They had taken second to the USA the past four Pan American games.
"I just came off a season from school and I pitched a lot of innings there. I pitched seven inning games all year so I was ready for it," said Groenewegen to CBC sports. "This is the best game we've played all year and it's perfect timing."
Groenewegen's success with Team Canada is no suprise. In just two seasons with the Gophers she already is just the third player in Big Ten history to win Big Ten Player, Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. She broke the Gopher single game record for strikeouts with 19 this past season.

This has been Groenewegen's third season pitching for Team Canada. Gopher Sports caught up with her earlier this summer to talk about how her experience playing internationally has been. Read more about that here.
