This past week boasted another accolade for recent swimming graduate Jessica Plant. She was selected as a Big Ten Conference honoree for NCAA Woman of the Year. The next selection for this prestigious honor will be the Top 30, ten from each division. In her last semester at the University of Minnesota, Plant was awarded the Big Ten Medal of Honor, Wayne Duke Award, Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship and was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist. Soon-to-be junior Ian Gordon and Gopher grad Chris Johnson competed at a meet in Mataro, Spain. Gordon had a silver finish in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 23.84 and placed eleventh in the 100-meter free (53.94). Johnson completed the meet with three top-five finishes, picking up second in the 200-meter backstroke (2:04.74), fourth in the 100-meter backstroke (58.68) and fifth in the 50-meter back (27.85). Both Gordon and Johnson are spending the summer in Germany.
Samantha Harding will kick off the Gophers action at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia tomorrow with the women's open water 10k. Harding along with Kierra Smith will represent Team Canada, while Jakub Maly will swim for his home country Austria. Minnesota alums David Plummer '08 and Josh Hall '13 will compete for USA and the Philippines, respectively. Follow @GopherSwimDive for live updates.
