Competition at the 2015 FINA World Championships wrapped this weekend in Kazan, Russia. The event was highlighted by two eighth-place finishes from the Gophers. Kierra Smith placed eighth in the 200-meter breaststroke for Canada with a 2:23.61. In the semifinals, Smith posted personal best of 2:22.82, lowering her school record. Team USA co-captain David Plummer finished eighth in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 24.95.
Jakub Maly picked up two personal bests at Worlds, lowering his school record in the 200-meter IM with a 2:01.68. Maly finished 21st in the 200 IM and 20th in the 400 IM (4:19.20) for Austria.
In San Antonio, several Gophers raced at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Brooke Zeiger competed in four individual events at the meet, including the 200 IM (2:16.82), 400 free (4:26.20), 400 IM (4:51.50) and 200 back (2:16.24). Conner McHugh led the Gophers in both the 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.25) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:18.64) events. Teammate Eric Sande joined McHugh in the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:04.16, while Nick Hatanaka followed McHugh in the 200-meter breast with a 2:18.67. Danielle Nack finished 22nd in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:13.98 and 37th in the 100-meter fly with a 1:00.78.
Incoming freshmen Erin Emery and Michael Messner competed in San Antonio. Emery posted a 4:17.71 in the 400-meter freestyle, and recorded a 8:48.15 in the 800-meter free. Messner finished 19th in the 400-meter IM with a 4:23.63 and finished with a 2:07.30 in the 200-meter IM.
Recent Gopher graduate CJ Smith finished twelfth in both the 400-meter free (3:52.98) and 1500-meter free (15:27.74). Alum Haley Spencer set a personal record in the women's 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:07.94, breaking under 1:08 for the first time for tenth place. Spencer finished twelfth (2:29.63) in the 200-meter breaststroke Monday morning and will compete in tonight's B final. Minnesota butterfly record holder Kyler Van Swol finished 14th in the 100 fly (53.47). Alums Derek Toomey and Jared Anderson also competed.
University of Minnesota divers Manny Pollard and Lexi Tenenbaum will compete at the AT&T National Championships in Orlando, Florida this week. Tenenbaum has qualified for the women's platform event on Tuesday, August 11. Pollard will also compete in platform diving, on Thursday, August 13.
