Perfect Game Release
University of Minnesota sophomore Matt Fiedler was named to the All-American Honorable Mention team, announced on Wednesday by Perfect Game. The Eagan, Minn. native was selected as a utility player, having played in the outfield and on the mound this summer.
Fiedler competed in 43 games for Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League. His .344 batting average led the club and tied for the fourth-highest mark among his competitors in the league. The sophomore slugged at a .558 clip, having hit eight homers and six doubles during his campaign this summer.
On the mound, Fiedler made 12 appearances and tallied 50 strikeouts in 52.2 innings of work. The right-hander held opponents to a .240 batting average through eight starts on the hill.
Fiedler was one of three players from the Big Ten to be recognized. Mason McCoy (Iowa) and Alex Hermeling (Ohio State) joined the Gopher representative on the award list.
Along with six other Minnesota teammates, Fiedler was also hand-picked by Major League Scouts to participate in the Northwoods League Major League Dreams Showcase earlier this month.
Fiedler is no stranger to being recognized for his contributions on the field as he was named to the John Olerud watch list last season for the Maroon and Gold, given to the nation's top two-way player. Fiedler was also named the Dianne Olson-Ficenko Dugout Club Player of the Year at the team's annual postseason banquet after hitting .310 and holding a team-best 2.86 ERA in 15 appearances on the mound for the Gophers.
Heading into his junior season, Fiedler and his fellow teammates report back to campus this fall.
