Katelyn Sauder joins the Gophers from Bloomington, Illinois, as a breaststroke specialist. Sauder comes to Minnesota with experience competing for Normal Community High School and Bloomington-Normal YMCA Waves. She enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, being active outdoors and plans to major in kinesiology. Her favorite race is the 200-meter breaststroke.
GopherSports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Katelyn Sauder: When I visited Minnesota, I immediately felt welcomed by everyone. The entire team and coaching staff was so kind and seemed genuinely excited to have me there. I also loved the campus and I knew Minneapolis was where I wanted to live for the next four years.
GopherSports: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
Sauder: I'm excited to experience a whole new level of competition. Early on in my college search, I knew I wanted to compete in a major conference like the Big Ten, so I can't wait to contribute to this team in and out of the pool.
GopherSports: Thus far, what has been your best or proudest swimming memory?
Sauder: My best swimming memory is from the spring of my junior year. My club team was at our spring championship meet, and I was super relaxed and didn't have any major expectations going into the meet. But then I raced my 200 breaststroke and dropped 12 seconds from the previous summer and qualified for Junior Nationals. I was completely awestruck and so happy.
GopherSports: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
Sauder: I love reading a good book. I also love music. I played piano for seven years and sing with my friends all the time. I am really close to my family and friends, so I just love hanging out with them.
GopherSports: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
Sauder: In the coming years I hope to really contribute to this team in and out of the pool. I want to score points for the team at Big Tens and help defend the conference title. I also want to qualify for NCAAs and be a factor on the national scene. As for out of the pool, I want to be a teammate that people can trust and respect, but also have fun with and call a true friend.
