The Gophers welcome Junior National Team member and Minnesota native Olivia Johnston to the 2015-16 squad. Johnston has been named All-Conference (2011-2014), All-State (2013) and All-American (2013), and holds school records in the 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke. She joins the Gophers from Rosemount High School and Blackline Aquatics. Johnston specializes in breaststroke, individual medley and distance freestyle events. Her favorite race is the 400-yard IM.
GopherSports: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Olivia Johnston: It has been a dream of mine to swim for the University of Minnesota ever since I first saw the pool at a swim meet when I was 12. On my recruiting trip, it really felt like home. Everyone was so welcoming and I think I'll fit in well with the team. The coaching staff was also very welcoming and I can't wait to be able to work with them for the next four years.
GopherSports: What are you looking forward to the most with starting your collegiate career as a Golden Gopher?
Johnston: I'm looking forward to being a part of such a successful program in and out of the pool. I'm excited to get to know the team better and to have the opportunity to train hard to become the best swimmer and teammate I can be. I can't wait to represent this amazing team and to contribute to another successful season.
GopherSports: Thus far, what has been your best or proudest swimming memory?
Johnston: My favorite swimming memory is winning high school sections for the fourth year in a row this past high school season. It was a total team effort and I'm glad I got to share that moment with the other seniors, along with the rest of my team.
GopherSports: What do you like to do for fun outside of the pool?
Johnston: I love to spend time with my friends, family and my dog, Tilly. I also love to read and obsessively watch a few TV shows. Right now, a friend and I are training for a half marathon.
GopherSports: How do you think you will contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?
Johnston: I will contribute to the program through my swimming, but also through being a good teammate. I hope I can encourage and motivate my teammates by having a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.
