Box Score

BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team kicked off the Battle of the Bayou tournament hosted by LSU and the first traveling game of the season with a victory against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, 1-0.

"This game was similar to our Kansas game in that we started out a bit slow to find our rhythm," said head coach Stefanie Golan.

In the first half, the Gophers out shot the Ladyjacks 7-4 and had seven corner kick opportunities to SFA's two. Even as chances revealed themselves to capitalize, neither team found the back of the net.

"In the first half, we did okay to keep the ball but we struggled with the final piece," said Golan.

The Maroon and Gold picked up the momentum at the start of the second half and in the sixty-third minute of the game, sophomore Tori Burnett scored off a corner kick from junior Ashley Pafko.

On the night, Burnett was 75% on her four shots on frame with the lone goal on either side solidifying the Gopher victory.

In the second half alone, Minnesota out shot the Ladyjacks 12-2 and earned seven corner kick opportunities for a game total of 14.

Junior co-captain Simone Kolander and fellow junior Josee Stiever both tallied three shots, two of which were on goal for Stiever.

Redshirt senior Taylor Stainbrook, senior co-captain Haley Helverson, sophomores Sydney Squires and Rachel McCloskey and freshman April Bockin joined Stiever, Kolander and Burnett contributing to the 19 shots of the game.

"We came out in the second half on a mission to dictate the tempo and to find a way to win against an opponent that will win a lot of games this year," said Golan. "We created several opportunities and their goalkeeper and defenders did well to clear several sure goals off the line to keep the game close."

With the second victory of the season to add to the draw against the No. 23-ranked Kansas Jayhawks, junior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs, who was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week last week, earned her third straight shutout.

"I am happy we kept another clean sheet and we look forward to moving onto the next one and continuing to get better every day," said Golan. "We have a good team with a lot of character that is committed to putting in the work it takes to take the next step as a program."

LOOKING AHEAD
The Gophers will return to action on Sunday to face tournament host, the LSU Tigers. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Next week, Minnesota will continue their stint on the road and will head to Milwaukee, Wis. on Fri. Sept. 4 to face Marquette, followed by a trip on Sept. 6 to Lubbock, Texas to go head-to-head with Texas Tech.
