BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team was defeated by a lone goal in the finale of the Battle on the Bayou tournament hosted by the LSU Tigers. With the loss, the team's record moves to 2-1-1.
"This one stings a bit as we kept the ball really well, but struggled to get dangerous in the final third," said head coach Stefanie Golan.
Neither team conceded in the first half of play as the players headed to the locker room knotted at zero. In those first 45-minutes of play, the Maroon and Gold earned two corner kicks to LSU's one and tallied three shots, all contributed by sophomore Sydney Squires.
In the second half, the Tigers found opportunities that the Gophers defense succeed in deflecting, but in the sixty-ninth minute of play, LSU sophomore Jorian Baucom headed the ball into the net off a cross from teammate Summer Clarke.
Junior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs notched one save in the first half of play and three key grabs in the second to bring the game total to four. The lone goal from today's match is the first allowed point of the 2015 season.
Along with the goal allowed, Minnesota fell behind on shots and corner kicks. LSU shot nine times on goal, four of which were on frame to the Gophers' single shot and earned three corner kick opportunities to Minnesota's one.
"We did a lot of things right, but now we have to take that step in the final third," said Golan. "Credit LSU as they have two special forwards who connected on their goal. Our defenders did well most of the game, but all it takes is one and they got it."
"I believe in our team and I know we are going to learn from this and it is going to help propel us forward as we get back after it on Tuesday," said Golan. "It is early in the season and we are using every opportunity to help prepare us for our Big Ten season ahead."
The last time the Gophers met the Tigers was back in the 2013 series when the Maroon and Gold defeated LSU 2-1 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The teams now stand one-for-one in program matchups with LSU's victory today.
With the conclusion of the Battle on the Bayou tournament, three Gophers, including juniors Rashida Beal and Josee Stiever and sophomore Tori Burnett were named to the All-Tournament team.
