MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team won in exciting fashion Friday night over Marquette as the team won three minutes into overtime, 2-1.
With the win, Minnesota moves to 3-1-1.
"Marquette is a well coached team and is always really strong," said head coach Stefanie Golan. "Coming in and playing anybody on the road is difficult. The first half I think we played really well. We kept the ball and were getting really dangerous as we got up 1-0."
In the 17th minute of play, freshman April Bockin found a pass from sophomore Maddie Gaffney to then go one-on-one with the Marquette goalkeeper, beating her to the post for a Minnesota goal. Bockin's goal was the first of her collegiate career and Gaffney's first assist of the season.
"With that goal, I saw an opening and knew I could finish it," said Bockin. "I was overcome with excitement after that and happy we were able to get on the board first as a team."
"April is a goal scorer and I think she played particularly well tonight," said Golan. "She played with confidence and being able to score against a really good team will only carry that confidence from here on out."
In the first 45 minutes of regulation, the Gophers outshot the Golden Eagles six to five and both tallied five corner kick opportunities.
Junior co-captain Simone Kolander, redshirt senior Taylor Stainbrook, senior co-captain Haley Helverson, sophomore Rachel McCloskey and Bockin were all credited with the Gophers' six shots, with Stainbrook notching two.
Though Minnesota created most of the opportunities throughout the game, in the 79th minute, Marquette answered with a header goal by redshirt sophomore Molly Pfieffer off an assist from redshirt senior Jacie Jermier.
In the second half, the Maroon and Gold shot five times on goal to the Golden Eagles' six and both teams tallied four fouls.
Junior Josee Stiever joined the group of five that tallied shots in the first with two of her own in the second.
"In the second half, Marquette was able to tie up the game and they made it very difficult for us to possess the ball in the midfield which is what we like to do," said Golan.
With the Pfieffer goal leaving the teams knotted at 1-1 as regulation came to a close, the game would go into overtime.
Going into OT, Bockin found the first shot on goal and took the single Minnesota corner kick but was unable to capitalize on the attempts.
The extra time wouldn't last much longer however, as three minutes in, Helverson fired a shot from 25-yards out to solidify the Minnesota victory, 2-1.
"Going up against a team that's getting top-25 votes and getting a win in overtime is just unbelievable," said Helverson. "We have this team word, "unbreakable," that we always have in the back of our minds. Even though there might be so some bad moments within a game where we miss some opportunities, we can't be broken as a team and we will always fight through adversity. I think we proved that tonight."
In the goal, junior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs tallied three saves on the night. Her first save came in the first period and then stopped two more in the second. Hobbs has only given up given up two goals so far in the 2015 season.
"Tonight, we're going to enjoy this win and this moment," said Golan. "The girls are really pumped. Tomorrow as we travel, all of our focus will move onto the next game against Texas Tech, which is a really tough environment to play in. It's going to be a tough game, but I think our team has a lot of belief and we're going down there with all the intent to battle towards a win."
LOOKING AHEAD
The Maroon and Gold will head to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech this Sunday with game time set for 7:00 p.m. Following their return from back-to-back trips on the road, Minnesota will host two games back home at ELR.
