Gophers Fall in Five to Texas A&M

The University of Minnesota fell in five sets to Texas A&M, today, in Palo Alto, Calif. The Golden Gophers fell in the first set, 24-26, won sets two and three, 25-21 and 25-18, but fell in the fourth 21-25 and fifth sets to drop to 0-1.
Sarah Wilhite led the team with 17 kills, while Daly Santana had a double-double with 16 kills and 18 digs. Paige Tapp had 13 kills and hit a match-best .478. Dalianliz Rosado added 18 digs and a career-high four aces.Molly Lohman had nine blocks. In her first collegiate start, Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 31 assists, while Katie Schau had 30. Texas A&M narrowly outhit the Gophers .220 to .217.
Minnesota plays No. 2 Stanford tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: TAMU took the first set, 26-24. In a back and forth affair, the two teams had 12 tie scores and seven lead changes. As the two teams exchanged points, the Aggies took an 18-14 lead off two Gopher attack errors. The Gophers would come all the way back from the deficit with a 7-1 run. Santana pushed the lead to 23-21, but the Aggies battled back to tie the set and push it to 24-23 before winning the set, 26-24. The Aggies committed just three attack errors to hit .353 to Minnesota's .263.
Set 2: Minnesota came back from the first set and won, 25-21. Santana tied the set at 10-10 with a kill while Molly Lohman added a kill off the touch for an 11-10 lead, the Gophers first of the second set. Texas A&M would come back and tie the set at 16-16 on a block, but the Gophers would rattle off three-straight with two kills from Wilhite and an ace from Lohman to take a 19-16 lead. The Aggies responded and took a 20-19 lead off back-to-back kills. The Gophers, however, would end the set with a 6-1 run to put away the set and tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3: The two teams again exchanged points until Minnesota took a 19-16 lead on a kill from Santana, a TAMU attack error and a kill from Maddie Beal. Texas A&M took a timeout, but the Gophers came out of the break with a block from Beal and Lohman, followed by an overpass kill from Lohman to take a 21-16 lead. Lohman brought the set to 23-17 with a kill to force the Aggies to use their second timeout. TAMU came out of the break with a kill, but the Gophers rebounded with a kill from Santana and a block from Hannah Tapp and Molly Lohman to take the third set and a 2-1 lead. Minnesota hit .316 in the set, while limiting the Aggies to just .095 as they had nine attack errors.
Set 4: Texas A&M opened the fourth set with a 7-3 lead and never looked back en route to a 21-15 set win. The Aggies pushed the lead to 12-7 as the Gophers used their second timeout. Minnesota closed the deficit to 14-13 to force TAMU to call a timeout. The Aggies, however, put the lead back to 16-13 and again at 18-15. Minnesota made it 20-18, but the Aggies closed out the set with 4-2 run at the end for a 25-21 set win and tied the match at 2-2.
Set 5: The Aggies opened the fifth and deciding set with a 4-0 lead to force the Gophers to call a timeout. Texas A&M had a 6-1 lead before the Gophers came back to get four-straight points and trailed 6-5. The Aggies called a timeout and came out of the break to take a 9-6 lead, forcing Minnesota to call a timeout. Texas A&M added to its lead and went up, 14-8 before the Gophers added back-to-back kills to extend the match. The Aggies, however, added their 60th kill of the match for the 3-2 win.
