The University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated UC-Irvine in three sets Friday night in the second match of the Diet Coke Classic. The Gophers improved to 3-2 on the season.
Daly Santana led the Golden Gophers in kills with 15, and hit for .538, with only one error in the match. Paige Tapp and Hannah Tapp both had 10 kills in 16 attempts. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 36 assists, while Katie Schau had a match-high 13 digs. As a team, the Gophers hit .385 to UC-Irvine's .182, out blocked the Anteaters 10-4, and had a side-out percentage of 78 percent to 52 percent.
The Gophers will play again Saturday in the Diet Coke Classic at 10am and 7pm against North Dakota State and UCF.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota hit .370 as a team to earn a 25-15 first set win. The Gophers opened up the contest with an 8-3 run to kick off the 2015 home season. The lead would be all Minnesota would need as the Gophers maintained the lead throughout the set. Minnesota later pushed the lead 13-7 on a kill from Santana. The Gophers held a 19-12 lead when Lohman and Seliger-Swenson connected, while Paige Tapp pushed the lead to 22-14 with a kill. Santana and Paige Tapp ended the set with back-to-back kills for the 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Minnesota took a 2-0 lead on another 25-15 set win. Minnesota again opened up an early 11-6 lead off a Hannah Tapp kill. Minnesota pushed the lead to 15-8 when Paige Tapp added a kill, forcing the Anteaters to a take a timeout. The Gophers, however, would come out the break with a kill from Santana. Seliger-Swenson had a kill of her own as the Gophers lead, 17-9. After a Santana ace and a combined block from Hannah Tapp and Lohman, Minnesota led, 22-12. The Gophers would finish off the set with two kills from Paige Tapp and another from Santana to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Minnesota closed out an early deficit to win the third set, 25-19. The Anteaters took their first lead of the match when they opened up the set with a 9-6 lead. Minnesota took a timeout and later tied the set at 11 on a Lohman ace. The two teams traded points through 16-16 before Minnesota took a three-point lead, capped off with a Seliger-Swenson ace. The Gophers would push the score to 21-18 on a Lohman/H Tapp block, while Alyssa Goehner would later put the score at 23-19 on a kill. The Gophers would finish off the set on an Anteater attack error and a Paige Tapp kill to improve to 3-2 on the season.
