Sept. 22, 2015 Aided by two below-par rounds Tuesday at Cherokee Country Club, the Minnesota women's golf team moved two spots up the leaderboard to finish the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in eighth place. Minnesota's score of 289 on the day marked the second-lowest by any team in the field.
"I am very pleased with our team's performance, including today when only one team beat our five-over-par round," said head coach Michele Redman.
The Gophers' sophomore trio led the way, with Celia Kuenster (74-75-70-219) and Heather Ciskowski (71-74-74) both tying for 18th place at six-over-par. It was the best career finish for Ciskowski, while Kuenster marked her third round of the year at or below par. Classmate Sabrine Garrison fired the low Gopher round of the day at two-under-par 69, moving her into a tie for 28th place (78-74-69-221) at eight-over.
"We saw great teamwork today, and I'm especially happy with Sabrine's performance," added Redman.
Junior Emie Peronnin was three shots back, tied for 38th at +11 (73-75-76-224). Freshman Niamh Ward completed the tournament in a tie for 60th place (78-74-78-230, +17).
The Gophers as a team finished the week at 882 (296-297-289, +30), while Kent State earned the team title at five-under-par. The Golden Flashes' Taylor Kim defeated NC State's India Clyburn on the second playoff hole to claim medalist honors.
Minnesota will return to action in two weeks, taking part at the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Wilmette, Ill., on October 5-6.
