Sept. 26, 2015 Final Stats
The No. 21 University of Minnesota fell, 3-2, to No. 1 Penn State, tonight, in University Park, Pa. The Golden Gophers pushed the two-time defending champions to five sets, the first team to do so this season. Minnesota drops to 1-1 in Big Ten Conference play and 9-3 overall. PSU improves to 2-0 in the Big Ten and 13-0 this season.
Minnesota hit .216 for the match, while PSU hit .198, holding a 65-60 kill advantage. Defensively, Minnesota had 76 digs to PSU’s 75, while it out blocked PSU, 13-11.
Minnesota had four double-digit kills. Daly Santana led the Gophers with 19 kills (hit .255), while Paige Tapp (14), Hannah Tapp (13) and Alyssa Goehner (11) followed. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 52 assists, while Dalianliz Rosado had a match-best 24 digs, followed by Goehner with 17. Paige Tapp also led all blockers with nine.
Minnesota returns to the Sports Pavilion, Wednesday night, when it faces Northwestern, at 7 p.m. The Gophers then host No. 9 Illinois, Oct. 3, also at 7 p.m.
Set 1: Despite Minnesota hitting .324 to PSU’s .267, the Nittany Lions earned a 25-22 win. PSU had an 8-5 lead before the Gophers put together three-straight, capped off by a Santana ace, to tie the set. PSU rattled off three-straight points for an 11-8 lead. Minnesota would battle back to tie the set at 12 on a Paige Tapp kill. Tied at 14, PSU strung together four-straight points to hold an 18-14 lead. That would be all that PSU would need to keep control of the set. Minnesota closed the deficit to 20-17, but the Nittany Lions would hold a 22-18 lead. Minnesota closed the PSU lead to 22-20 on back-to-back kills from Paige Tapp, and forced PSU to call a timeout. As the Nittany Lions pushed to set point, Minnesota earned back-to-back points, but PSU closed out the set with an Ali Frantti kill to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: The Nittany Lions hit .273, while they limited Minnesota to .028 to take a 25-16 set win. PSU jumped out to 9-4 lead and maintained control of the set throughout to push its lead to 2-0. Hannah Tapp put the deficit to 11-7 on a kill. PSU would push the lead to 10 with a 19-9 lead. PSU put up a 24-13 lead, but Minnesota extended the set with a Santana kill, a Santana ace and a PSU attack error to cut the lead to 24-16. However, PSU won the set on a Frantti kill to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: The Gophers used 13 kills in the third set and forced nine PSU attack errors to win the set, 25-19. The set loss was the first for Penn State this season as it won the previous 12 matches, 3-0. Minnesota jumped out to an early 7-4 lead before PSU would later tie the set at 9-9 on an ace. Minnesota, however, would take a 12-9 lead on a Hannah Tapp kill, a PSU bad set and a PSU attack error. The Gophers would then have a 14-10 lead off a Goehner/Hannah Tapp block as PSU called a timeout. Minnesota pushed the lead to 17-12 off a P Tapp/Maddie Beal block. A kill by Paige Tapp and Goehner added a 19-14 as PSU called its second timeout. Goehner and Paige Tapp combined for a block at 20-15, but PSU put back-to-back points together as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers, however, maintained the lead to 22-19 and closed out the set with a Santana/Hannah Tapp kill, a Goehner kill and a Santana ace to cut lead to 2-1.
Set 4: PSU took an early 8-6 lead, but the Gophers came back to tie the set at 8-8 off a Paige Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block. Minnesota went up 13-10 with a Hannah Tapp kill and a PSU attack error. The Nittany Lions would earn back-to-back points before Santana had a kill for a 14-12 lead. Minnesota would later lead 16-13 off a Hannah Tapp kill. With a 17-14 lead, PSU would string together three-straight to tie the set at 17 as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota responded with back-to-back kills from Goehner and Paige Tapp to take a 19-17 lead, which forced PSU to use its second set timeout. As PSU cut the Gopher lead to 22-19, Minnesota again finished off the set. Santana had all three kills to close out the set and tie the match, 2-2.
Set 5: PSU used a .346 hitting clip in the fifth and deciding set to take the match. PSU took a 5-3 lead as Minnesota would keep the score within two points. Minnesota would later tie up the set at 9-9 on a kill from Hannah Tapp and a PSU attack error. The Nittany Lions, however, responded with two kills for an 11-9 lead, as the Gophers called a timeout. PSU pushed the match to set point on a Haleigh Washington kill, while it gained match point on a Frantti kill to go win the match, 3-2, and improve to 13-0 this season.
