 The No. 16 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated Northwestern, 3-0, tonight at the Sports Pavilion. The Golden Gophers won 25-16, 25-23, 25-21, to improve to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play.
Hannah Tapp led the Gophers when she hit .333 and had 11 kills. Daly Santana had 12 kills and two aces, while Paige Tapp had six kills and hit .357. Dalianliz Rosado had 16 digs, while Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 36 assists. The Wildcats held a 7-6 block lead, but the Gophers led in kills (41-38) and digs (62-58).
 Minnesota hosts No. 7 Illinois, Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion. Game time is set for 7 p.m.  
Set 1: Minnesota took a 1-0 lead off a 25-16 first set win. The Gophers hit .324 to Northwestern's .195, while also providing three aces and three blocks. After exchanging points from 8-8, Minnesota went on a four-point run, capped off with three kills and an ace by Daly Santana for a 12-8 lead. Minnesota would later go up 14-9 on a kill by Paige Tapp and an ace by Molly Lohman for a 15-9 lead. As Northwestern closed the gap to 19-14 on a block, Minnesota would close out the set with a 6-2 run. Minnesota took a 20-14 lead off a Santana kill. Minnesota would finish off the set with a Hannah Tapp kill from Santana.
Set 2: Despite Northwestern outhitting the Gophers, .140 to .188 in the second set, Minnesota won the second, 25-23. After tying at 10 and again at 15, Minnesota would take the lead for good at 16-15. Northwestern would keep the set close as it was within two until a Lohman kill would put the Gophers up, 20-17. Minnesota later held a 24-21 lead on a Santana kill, but Northwestern pushed set point with back-to-back kills before Minnesota took a timeout. The Gophers responded with a Santana kill to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: The Gophers closed out the match with a 25-21 third-set win. Minnesota trailed by two at 8-6, but the Gophers came back to tie the set at 9-9 off a Seliger-Swenson ace. The two teams traded points through 15-15 before Minnesota took a two-point lead at 17-15 off a Northwestern service error and an attack error. The Wildcats would take a timeout and would later tie the set at 20-20 on a Gopher attack error. Minnesota would take a timeout and come out of the break with two points as Northwestern committed an attack error and Hannah Tapp added her 10th kill of the match to take a 22-20 lead. Northwestern burned its second timeout. The Gophers, however, wouldn't defer as they won the third, 25-21.
