Maroon Opens with Win in Extra Innings

The Maroon team took the first game of the Steak 'n' Beans series in 11 innings, 3-2. The game stretched across two days as the time and innings limit was reached on Friday, forcing a decisive contest on Saturday.

Maroon was led offensively by a pair of three-hit performances by freshmen Jordan Kozicky and Ben Mezzenga. Both first-year players recorded doubles and crossed the plate one time. Mezzenga added an RBI and swiped a bag, as well.

Nick Lackney earned the win on the mound after holding the opposition to a scoreless top of the 11th. Tim Shannon got the nod and went 3.0 innings and struck out two. Ty McDevitt and Brian Glowicki split the next five innings and surrendered one run with a pair of strikeouts. Lucas Gilbreath followed suit and added a team-high three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of play.

Jordan Smith paced the Gold squad with a 4-for-5 showing at the dish that included an RBI base knock. Toby Hanson, Troy Traxler and Terrin Vavra each contributed two hits apiece to round out the offense.

Toby Anderson started the game for the Gold contingent and went 3.1 innings, surrendering only a pair of hits. Dalton Sawyer came in relief and struck out one in 2.0 innings of work.

The second game of the Steak 'n' Beans series began on Saturday, but was cut short with the conclusion set to take place on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Siebert Field. Games are free and open to the public to attend.
