SERIES, ETC.
Indiana now leads the all-time series with Minnesota by a 92-65 margin. The Gophers had won two straight against the Hoosiers at Williams Arena before today's setback, and lead 44-34 in games played in Minneapolis. Richard Pitino is now 1-2 in his career versus the Hoosiers.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
For the second straight game, Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino went with a youthful starting lineup, as the Gophers opened the game with sophomores Nate Mason and Bakary Konate along with freshmen Ahmad Gilbert, Dupree McBrayer and Jordan Murphy. That group grabbed an early 8-4 lead at Nebraska, and notched a 5-0 lead versus the Hoosiers. Seven of the 10 players who saw action in the game for Minnesota were underclassmen. Murphy finished with 10 points and eight boards, while McBrayer added nine points, three assists and three rebounds.
FIRST HALF EDGE
Minnesota led for all but 28 seconds of the first half, including twice holding leads of nine points. The Hoosiers went on a 13-3 run to take a brief 33-32 lead with 1:19 left in the half, but held it for just 23 seconds before a pair of Joey King free throws put the Gophers back in front. Indiana tied it with five seconds remaining, and the teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 34-34. King came off the bench to pace the Gophers with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes.
KING STRONG OFF BENCH
After making starts in 65 straight games dating back to 2013-14, Joey King came off the bench for the second consecutive game and played one of his better games in recent weeks. King led the Gophers with 12 first-half points and finished with a team-high 18 points. He made 5-of-7 field goals, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, while going 4-of-7 at the free throw line.
MURPHY NARROWLY MISSES DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Jordan Murphy narrowly missed his first point-rebound double-double in Big Ten play, as he finished with 10 points and tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds. In six B1G games, Murphy is averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He leads the Gophers with five double-doubles this season.
