The ITA released its first Division I women's tennis rankings of the 2016 season with the University of Minnesota Gophers opening ranked No. 60.
Last year the Gophers posted 17 total wins and six conference wins for the second straight year. Before those two seasons the last time Minnesota had seen that kind of success was in the 2003 season.
The Maroon and Gold finished ranked No. 57 a season ago. They returned a strong core while adding three freshman this season. In the fall they were 51-49 in singles play and went 29-17 in doubles.
Two seniors in Julia Courter and Jessika Mozia cracked the top 25 all-time singles win list in Minnesota history this fall and will look to continue to climb that list this spring. Head Coach Chuck Merzbacher enters his fourth season at coaching at Minnesota and is just six wins away from reaching 400 overall in his career.
The Maroon and Gold start their spring season on January 17 at the Baseline Tennis Center taking on Northern Illinois and North Dakota.
