Gophers Post Best Score Since 1998

FAIRFAX, CALIF.--- The Gophers posted their lowest round since 1998, carding a 15-under-par 269 in the first round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational. Minnesota stands in sixth place after the first day of the tournament with a 36-hole team score of 550 (-18). Four of the five Gophers competing currently sit under par.
The Maroon and Gold's impressive opening round was due in large part part due to Rúnar Arnorsson's strong finish in round one. Arnorsson recorded four birdies in his last four holes, totaling seven birdies. He carded a 64, the third lowest round in school history. The Iceland native already owns the lowest round in school history. He is third on the team and tied for 23rd overall, shooting a 138 on the day (-4).
Thomas Longbella led the way for Minnesota with two stellar rounds. He turned in a 69 (-2) in the morning round and a personal-best 67 (-4) in the afternoon. Longbella recorded six birdies in his final round and is currently in 16th place.
Riley Johnson sits only one stroke behind the freshman and is the second-best scorer for the Gophers through 36. Johnson finished his day shooting 137 (-5). He only recorded one boogie to his six birdies on the day. The junior currently sits in 18th.
Justin Doeden overcame a slow start to the day to finish 1 under par on the day. He recorded six birdies over his last 13 holes of round one to finish the morning even. Doeden is in 38th.
Rounding out the Gophers' lineup is Peter Jones, who carded a 147 on the day (+6).
The Gophers are six shots behind first-place St. Mary's and Pepperdine. Arizona State's Ki Taek Lee leads individually at 12 under.
Minnesota tees off for the final round tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
