Gophers Finish Strong at FGCU Fall Tournament

Estero, Fla. - The Golden Gophers returned home after a successful outing at the Florida Gulf Coast University Fall tournament this past weekend.
Due to hurricane Matthew, the tournament was changed to a dual team format with only four schools attending but no team scores were kept. Minnesota played Florida Gulf Coast, Central Florida and Stetson.
The Maroon and Gold would post a 13-11 singles record and went 10-7 in doubles matches during the weekend.
Singles
Freshman Karyna Bihel lost her first match of the tournament to Sara Kelly of Florida Gulf Coast 6-3, 3-6, 0-1(7) but bounced back with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katherine Stokes of Stetson in her second match. Bihel finished off the day with a win, defeating Stetson's Lucie Renault 6-1, 6-2.
Fellow freshman Cammy Frei won her first match 6-1, 6-2. She fell in the second match 0-6, 3-6 but rebounded with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(6) victory.
Annemarie Emme fell in her first match 4-6, 6-3, 0-1(6) and then again in another tough fought match 6-2, 6-7, 0-1(7).
Camila Vargas Gomez won all three of her singles matches. In her first match she defeated Laura Falceto Font of Florida Gulf Coast 6-3, 6-4. In her second match she was victorious over Maja Salibasic of Stetson 6-3, 6-3 then won the final match versus Stetson's Sofia Ferding 6-4, 6-3. Vargas Gomez is currently on a four-match winning streak.
Kalyssa Hall lost her two singles matches, the first one 4-6, 2-6 and the second one 6-2, 6-7, 1-0(7). Freshman Tina Kreinis lost her first two matches in tie breakers 3-6, 6-2, 0-1(8) and 6-2, 4-6, 0-1 (9) but won her third match against Julia Ascua of Florida Gulf Coast 6-1, 6-7, 1-0(3).
In her first match, Caroline Ryba defeated Lucie Renault of Stetson 6-3, 6-1. Ryba ended up falling in her second match 4-6, 6-7 to Monica Matias of Central Florida.
Junior Mehvish Safdar had a strong weekend, going 2-1 in singles. She won her first match 6-1, 6-4 then took her second match 6-1, 6-2. She ended up falling in her final singles match 0-6, 2-6.
Senior captain Maja Vujic played two matches versus opponents from Florida Gulf Coast. In her first match, Vujic competed against Julianna Curtis but fell 3-6, 2-6 and defeated Laura Falceto Font in her second match 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(2).
Doubles
Frei had a 4-2 record in doubles matches with four different partners. She teamed up with Ryba twice, winning their first match 6-0 then falling in their second match 1-6. Frei would win a match 6-4 with Hall and lose their second match 2-6. In her final two matches she won 6-4 with Kreinis and 6-4 with Vargas Gomez.
Bihel lost two of her three doubles matches, the first 4-6 with Vujic and 1-6 with Emme. The win came with her second paring with Vujic where they defeated Stetson 6-1.
Vargas Gomez won her match with Emme 7-6 and with Ryba 6-2. She is 10-1 in doubles matches this fall.
Emme posted two defeats with Kreinis to go with the loss with Bihel and the win with Vargas Gomez.
Kreinis and Safdar teamed up twice winning their first match 6-3 over a pair from Stetson. They fell in their second match 6-7 to a duo from Florida Gulf Coast.
Safdar also teamed up with Ryba twice. They won both of their matches 6-2 over teams from Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. Another Ryba win came from playing with Vargas Gomez when they defeated Florida Gulf coast 6-2.
The next competition for the Gophers will be hosting the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships Oct. 13-Oct. 17 at Baseline Tennis Center.
