Gophers Open Weekend in Madison

MADISON, Wis. (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's cross country team returned to action on Friday afternoon, competing in the 2016 Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational - arguably the most competitive race in the nation outside of the national championships.

The Maroon & Gold finished 22nd among the talented field, totaling 540 points.

All-Big Ten junior Obsa Ali led the Gophers with a 48th-place finish after crossing the finish line for the eight-kilometer race at 24:35.5.

Team captain Charlie Lawrence was next across the finish line for Minnesota in 79th overall with a time of 24:52.5 at Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course.

The Gophers also scored Connor Olson in 103rd at 25:02.9, Matt Welch in 149th at 25:28 and Derek Wiebke closed out the team scoring for Minnesota in 161st, time of 25:39.1.

Minnesota also ran Evan Ferlic, who was two spots back from Wiebke, in 163rd with a time of 25:43 while Joey Duerr came in 168th at 25:49.0 - a new personal record.

Earlier in the day, the Gophers featured three runners in the open competition with Shane Streich leading the way in 38th. The redshirt freshman posted a new personal record for an eight-kilometer course at 25:54.4. Wayde Hall was two spots back in 40th at 25:57.8 while Eric Colvin finished in 82nd at 27:36.3.

A separate contingency of Gophers will be in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Jim Drews Invitational in Ettrick, Wis.
