Gophers Finish Seventh at Royal Oaks Intercolliegiate

DALLAS, TEXAS--- Led by Thomas Longbella in a tie for sixth place, the Minnesota men's golf team finished tied for seventh at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. The Gophers posted a final-round 351, their best score of the tournament. Their five-player score totaled 1079 (+14).
"I'm so proud of our guys as they keep performing better each week," coach John Carlson said of his team's showing.
Longbella had the best finish by a Gopher in a team tournament this year. The freshman was 4 under for the tournament, and carded a 3-under 68 on Tuesday. He had four birdies and one bogey in Round 3.
"What a start for Thomas," Carlson said. "Capping off his fourth collegiate event with his first top 10 finish against a great field in Texas."
Justin Doeden (+1) shot a 2-under 69 to cap off another top-20 finish. The senior has four of those in as many tournaments this fall, and seven of his 12 rounds have been under par.
Like Longbella, Riley Johnson shot a 68 on Tuesday. Johnson recorded only one boogie in his final round. Overall, he carded 220 (+7) and finished 46th.
Rúnar Arnorsson placed 43rd after a third-round 74 brought his total to 219 (+6). William Leaf played his best round of the tournament, a 72, and finished tied for 62nd. Peter Jones also tied with him.
Matt Rachey recorded 232 overall and finished 68th playing as an individual.
Host Baylor cruised to a win, shooting 31-under-par. The Bears' Braden Bailey and Matthew Perrine tied for medalist honors.
The Gophers will conclude their fall season in Hawai'i at the Ka'anapali Classic Nov. 4-6.
