Gold Takes Game One

In the first game of the Steak 'N Beans series, the Gold team came away with an 8-3 win over the Maroon squad.
The Gold scoring began in the bottom of the first inning when Micah Coffey drove in Troy Traxler with a two-out single after Traxler stole second base. The Gold team threatened again in the second inning but a nice play by Jordan Kozicky down the third base line ended the inning.
Terrin Vavra hit a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Gold team.
Toby Hanson answered with a solo home run of his own in the top of the fourth inning off of freshman Nolan Burchill. Burchill would work out of the inning by picking up a strike out and picking off Kozicky from first base.
In the bottom of the inning the Gold team tacked on two more runs. Vavra came to the plate with the bases full and hit into a fielder's choice that scored Alex Farley. Coffey drove in the second run of the bottom half of the inning when he singled.
The Gold team extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Eli Wilson scored on a Ben Mezzenga single.
The Maroon team put up one run in the sixth inning when Kozicky hit into a double play but Eduardo Estrada, Jr. scored on the fielder's choice.
Freshman Jack Wassel scored for the Gold team in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-2 after a Mezzenga sacrifice fly.
Coffey drove in his third run of the night when he hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning. Wilson would then walk with the bases full to put up the Gold team up 8-2.
In the top of the ninth inning, Estrada hit a two-out ground rule double to right field that scored one to put the score 8-3 in favor of the Gold team.
Toby Anderson started the game for the Maroon team while Lucas Gilbreath toed the bump for the Gold team. Anderson picked up two strike outs over three inning and Gilbreath struck out one batter.
Burchill took over for Gilbreath in the fourth inning and struck out three batters over three innings. Jackson Rose pitched two innings for the Maroon team.
Senior Tim Shannon came in for the Gold team in the seventh inning. He struck out two batters in two innings. Jeff Fasching took over the mound for the Maroon team in the sixth inning and collected one strikeout.
Sam Bridges pitched the ninth inning for the Gold team and struck out one batter to close out the game.
The next two games of the Steak 'N Beans series will be Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:15 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. weather permitting. Games are free and open for the public to attend.
