MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt junior Madeline Strandemo has been named an individual qualifier for the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championship, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Committee announced today.
Strandemo earned all-region honors with her seventh-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional in a career-best six-kilometer time of 20:23.7 on Friday. She led Minnesota in four of six meets this season, including her Midwest Regional showing and placing eighth as the top Gopher at the Big Ten Conference Championship.
The Fargo, N.D., native will make her second appearance at the NCAA meet after finishing as the third Gopher in 147th overall a year ago; Strandemo served as an alternate for Minnesota at the 2014 NCAA Championship.
Strandemo is one of 38 individuals selected to participate in the NCAA Championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals qualified in their respective NCAA regional competitions. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their regions.
In addition, 31 teams were selected to participate in the NCAA Championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.
Minnesota finished fourth at the NCAA Midwest Regional, missing a team bid to the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2004. The Gophers' NCAA streak ends at 11-straight years.
Strandemo will compete at the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Indiana State's LaVern Gibson Championship Course at Wabash Valley Family Sport Center located in Terre Haute, Ind. The women's 6K race is set for 10 a.m. CT. A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast on NCAA.com.
