Gophers Sweep Wildcats

The No. 2 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Northwestern, tonight, in Evanston, Ill. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 21-4 overall, 13-3 in Big Ten play, and have not dropped a set in six-straight matches.
As a team, Minnesota hit .475 to Northwestern's .097. The Gophers dominated at the net with a 10-1 block advantage. Minnesota established 44 kills to the Wildcats' 28.
Sarah Wilhite had her second double-double of the weekend with 12 kills (hit .370) and a team-high 10 digs. She was followed by Hannah Tapp with nine (hit .571) and Paige Tapp and Molly Lohman each with eight. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 29 assists. P Tapp led the Gophers with a solo block and five assists.
Minnesota is back in action next Friday when it faces No. 15 Michigan State at 7 p.m. The Gophers then play No. 17 Michigan, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers hit .593 in the opening set and had kills from six individuals to win, 25-14. Minnesota opened the match with a 7-3 lead as the Wildcats called their first timeout. H Tapp put the Gophers up, 10-4, followed by a Northwestern attack error for an 11-4 lead. Following the NU attack error, the Wildcats burned their second timeout and came out of the break with a 4-0 run. Minnesota responded with a Wilhite kill and a block to put the Gophers up, 13-8. The Gophers later went up 18-12 on a Lohman kill, while H Tapp added a kill for a 20-14 advantage. Minnesota closed out the set with a Seliger-Swenson kill, followed by a Wilhite kill to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: Minnesota utilized an 8-0 run at the end of the second set to win, 25-13. Minnesota opened with a 5-1 lead as Northwestern called a timeout. The Gophers, however, came out of the break and built an 8-3 cushion off a Wilhite kill. Northwestern, however, cut Minnesota's lead to 10-8, but a Northwestern service and attack error put the Gopher lead to 12-8 as NU used its second timeout of the set. A pair of H Tapp kills later put the Gophers up, 16-10, and 17-12. Off Hart's serve rotation, the Gophers strung together eight straight. After two Wilhite kills, Hart provided an ace at 21-13. The Gophers later finished off the set with back-to-back blocks from H Tapp and Seliger-Swenson to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Minnesota used an 11-1 run and hit .458 in the third for a 25-10 win. Like the second set, Minnesota began the third with a 5-1 lead as Northwestern called a timeout. The Gophers built an 8-2 lead on a P Tapp/Lohman combined block. After a Northwestern kill at 11-7, Minnesota went on an 11-1 run. Seliger-Swenson had back-to-back kills to push the Gopher lead to 13-7 as the Wildcats called a timeout. Wilhite added aces at 18-8 and 22-8. After a Northwestern sideout, Minnesota closed out the set with three-straight kills for the 3-0 win.
