Nov. 15, 2016 The University of Minnesota today announced that its student-athletes have again posted an impressive Graduation Success Rate (GSR), the latest in a long-standing trend of impressive academic and graduation numbers for Gopher student-athletes. This year's GSR of 90 percent is two percentage points higher than last year and 23 points higher than Minnesota's first GSR, released by the NCAA in 2005.

"We regularly talk with our students, our coaches and our staff about doing things the right way, and a big piece of that for me is focusing on academics, working hard in the classroom and ensuring our students are graduating," said athletics director Mark Coyle. "I appreciate the commitment to academics shown by our students and our outstanding staff every day. Graduating students is always our number one priority, so I'm happy to see our graduation success rate is once again very high."

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree. The report represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2006 and 2009. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.

"Our student-athletes continue to achieve tremendous results in the classroom," said JT Bruett, director of the McNamara Academic Center for Student-Athletes. "There is nothing more important than for a student-athlete to receive their undergraduate degree. At the University of Minnesota student-athletes, coaches and staff all work together to make this our top priority."

The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates in the report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave an institution for any reason as non-graduates from their initial school, even if they leave in good academic standing and subsequently graduate from another institution. Gopher Athletics saw an even bigger increase in this number year-over-year, an eight-point jump to 80 percent.

Graduation Success Rates for all 11 Gopher women's programs were 85 percent or higher and eight exceeded 90 percent. Six programs were a perfect 100 percent in the latest report: basketball, gymnastics, hockey, tennis, soccer and volleyball.

Eight Gopher men's programs achieved Graduation Success Rates of 83 percent or higher and seven were above 90 percent, led by golf, gymnastics and tennis all achieving 100 percent rates. Every men's program matched or surpassed the federal rate for their respective sports.
